Butt Turkey

Just last weekend we had tried Butt Chicken. This was a recipe from the PopUp Times message boards. You take a whole chicken, coat with olive oil, season and then sit this up on a half of can of beer with a garlic clove in it. Place in the grill, standing up. Grill until done. It was delicious and as moist as can be.

Well, this got us thinking. We have a couple of turkeys in our freezer and thought that we should try grilling one. A regular can wouldn't work, too small. So I went and got the large Fosters 'oil can' . I also saw a Labatts Blue and got one of those too. Well, as I was trying to cut off the top of the Labatt's can, the can opener cut into the side of the can. So much for using the Labatts. The good news was that I like Blue better so I could drink the whole thing. :-)

Next came the Fosters. The top cut off without any problem.

OK, I seasoned the turkey and it was time to place the turkey upright on the beer can. Easier said than done. The turkey was just too heavy. (DW bought it for 10 cents per pound and the turkey weighed in at 21 lbs!)

So what to do. We tried various items to prop the turkey up on and decided that it just wasn't going to work that way. Then we decided to try a large stock pot. Just like Goldilocks, we tried the three stock pots that I've got until we found the right one. The turkey fit perfectly and stood straight up without any problems. So, we took the turkey back out, placed the can inside and carefully slid the turkey back down in the pot. I took the grates off of the grill and set the pot with the turkey smack dab in the middle. I fired up the front and back burners and waited.

It was a beautiful day to be outside, so we cleaned out the garage. All afternoon we could smell that turkey cooking away. Well 5 1/2 hours later it was time!!

We pulled the turkey out of the pot. It looked so good we decided to take these pictures. We had to pry the VERY HOT can out of the bird and then proceeded to tear it up limb from limb. YUMMMM !!

It can be done and here's the proof.
